What is VHS?
The Virtual High School (VHS) offers middle and high school courses for students including core courses, Advanced Placement®, credit recovery, and unique electives. VHS can help your child meet graduation requirements, access additional courses, and explore a fun and interesting new subject. Wondering if online learning is a good fit for your child? Here are some commonly asked questions to explain how VHS works, and its benefits:
Students are provided with a username and password to log into their online course. They will have access to a short orientation to help understand and navigate the course. They will communicate with their teacher, complete weekly coursework, and participate in disscusions with classmates. Students can take a VHS course as part of their regular school schedule, or in addition to the regular school schedule. Courses are asynchronous. Asynchronous means that students can work on their courses any time during the day or evening, as long as they meet the deadlines and due dates set by their course instructors. Students should check with their school to see if VHS coursework is accepted for credit.
All VHS courses are led by qualified teachers actively guiding students by interacting in class discussions, and private discussions with each student, and grading assignments. Teachers are available and respond within 24 hours to student inquires Monday-Friday.
While VHS does offer some flexible credit recovery courses, our standard courses follow a traditional semester and full-year schedule with specific start and end dates. Courses follow a weekly schedule with due dates for assignments and scheduled exams. Our fall semester starts in September, and our spring semester in January. Please check our academic calendar for start and end dates for the current academic year. Courses are asynchronous. Asynchronous means that students can work on their courses any time during the day or evening, as long as they meet the deadlines and due dates set by their course instructors.
While most schools accept VHS course credit, we strongly recommend contacting your child’s school to make sure they will accept our course credit. Upon completion of their course, your student will receive a transcript including final grade and credits earned. This transcript can be presented to your child’s school for credit.
Yes, VHS is fully accredited by AdvancED and the Middle States Commission of Secondary Schools. We also offer a selection of NCAA approved courses, please check our Accreditation and NCAA Approval page for more information.
VHS courses are asynchronous, so students do not have to log into the course at specific times. Asynchronous means that students can work on their courses any time during the day or evening, as long as they meet the deadlines and due dates set by their course instructors. However, since the courses are not self-paced, the course does follow a weekly schedule with regular scheduled due dates for assignments, and scheduled exams. Students will be responsible for completing work by designated due dates and are able to contact the teacher via private thread topics if they have any questions or need assistance.
VHS courses do not have any live video formats. Students do all their work within our course program and due to the asynchronous format, there is no scheduled log in times. Asynchronous means that students can work on their courses any time during the day or evening, as long as they meet the deadlines and due dates set by their course instructors. However, students do interact with each other through discussion boards and with teachers via private thread topics.
Students will need reliable access to the internet, and an electronic device with internet access. Computers, tablets, and smartphones will all work with VHS.
