Schools expand course offerings; prepare students for college and careers

Seeking a simple and successful way to expand course offerings, schools in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have joined the growing number of schools across the nation to partner with The Virtual High School (VHS, Inc.), a non-profit leader in online and blended learning.

VHS will add Emerson Jr./Sr. High School in Emerson, NJ as a fully participating school with two of its educators teaching VHS courses while Wilton High School in Wilton Connecticut, will collaborate with VHS to allow students to partake in the wide array of core and elective courses offered by VHS. In New York’s Bronx borough, Mount St. Michael Academy has also turned to VHS to take student learning beyond classroom walls.

The Virtual High School has a distinguished 20-year record of providing middle and high schools from 40 states and 33 countries with access to high-quality online and blended learning experiences, while supporting educators with professional development and services to provide effective online instruction for every student.

The new schools will expand school offerings with the VHS course catalog which consists of more than 200 unique online courses, including 23 AP® offerings. A 2016 survey of VHS participants found a 97 percent retention rate of VHS members in the 2015-16 school year (up from 93 percent in the previous year), indicating strong educator and student satisfaction with the quality of instruction being delivered.

“We’ve set the standards for quality learning that continue to shape the online education industry today,” said Carol Ribeiro, President & CEO of VHS. “We are pleased that these school administrators, like our more than 600 other school partners around the world, understand the importance of helping students develop independent learning skills and explore college majors and careers, all while earning and recovering credits through our global online classrooms.

"Partnering with the Virtual High School will allow Mount St. Michael students the opportunity to spread their academic wings and experience courses other high school students may never experience,” said Victor Cristiano, Director of Testing & Social Studies Teacher at Mount St. Michael Academy. “This partnership will also allow our students to make connections with other students from around the world."

Ribeiro added, “VHS also offers the opportunity for students to start exploring careers and possible college majors. In addition to our many AP courses which offer college-level study, we also provide unique and engaging electives that can spark an interest in future professions. College and career readiness is of paramount importance, and we stand ready to help schools and district prepare their students for life after high school.”
