This year, our new and enhanced courses span a variety of disciplines, including world language, language arts, business, and science. Each of these courses began in the fall of 2020 and leverage our global online classroom environment. Here are the new and enhanced courses VHS Learning is offering this year:
1. American Sign Language (ASL) 3
This new course builds upon skills developed in ASL 1 & 2, giving students opportunities to increase their vocabulary and speed while expanding their ability to understand and express themselves in ASL. ASL 3 addresses the five goal areas targeted in the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.
The new Physics course is an introductory course with a comprehensive lab program that is designed to prepare students to explore and understand the physical science of the world around them through the basic rules of physics. Key topics in this course include mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, optics, and selected modern physics concepts. Students participate hands-on in physics experiments with materials provided in their lab kit and learn to do calculations as they investigate physics concepts.
3. AP® English Literature and Composition
The preexisting AP® English Literature and Composition course has been enhanced to better suit the needs of online learners while maintaining the pace of a typical university English course. This course is the equivalent of a first semester college English course and is devoted to the study of English literature from a variety of time periods and genres. Students write, collaborate, analyze literature, and learn about cultural and literary concepts as they work through the rigorous and fast-paced curriculum.
Marketing is a standard high school level course that gives students an introduction to marketing, both for students interested in pursuing marketing and for those who wish to become more informed consumers. Students learn the fundamentals of business, marketing and economics, including knowledge and skills in advertising, promotion, product pricing, distribution, selling, management, and the impact of global business. Marketing is a 15-week course and will run again in the spring semester.
5. AP® Latin
The newest AP® offering in the VHS Learning catalog, AP® Latin is the equivalent of a first semester college Latin course. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to read, understand, translate, analyze, and appreciate Latin poetry and prose. The course is available to students who have already successfully completed Latin 1, 2, and 3.
